Elderly Suicide: Symptoms and How to Help

Elderly Suicide: Symptoms and How to Help

According to the CDC, suicide is the leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide rates have increased by up to 30% since 1999, with roughly 45,000 lives lost to suicide since 2016, making it more than just a mental health concern.

As a provider of health services in Minnesota, we believe learning more about its symptoms can equip us with the knowledge to help our senior loved ones who may be at risk. In line with the World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), we will discuss its symptoms and how we can provide help.

Factors that heighten the risk of elderly suicide:

  • Relationship woes – Relationship issues are the leading cause of suicide in seniors. Issues with their significant other or quarrels with family can take its toll on their mental and emotional health.
  • Life crisis – Experiencing a life crisis, particularly within the last two weeks, also increases their risk. This includes the loss of their spouse, financial troubles, and other factors that increase their risks, such as drinking and similar risky behaviors.
  • Health issues – Preexisting health conditions can influence an individual’s decision. Seniors with a newly discovered illness or those struggling with an existing condition may have suicidal or death ideations.

How can we help?
If you suspect a senior loved one may be at risk, there are ways you can help. This includes reaching out to prevent isolation, especially during the ongoing outbreak. You also have the option of hiring living services to provide the care and support they need.

Agencies like Primus Incorporated that offer healthcare services in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, provide support to improve their health, minimize their risk, and enhance their quality of life.
